Blue Hawaii is a 1950 Screen Songs cartoon.
Summary[]
Singalong with spot gags about the (then) territory of Hawaii. A tourist ship heads out to Hawaii, with lots of visual gags, such as Pearl Harbor shown as a pearl necklace with the clasp opening up and letting ships in. When Jimmy Durante comes off the ship, a lei is thrown over him and gets caught on his big nose. A tandem surfer rides a wave. A big wave covers him. When the wave is gone, the bottom surfer is now a shark.
Plot[]
"Blue Hawaii" begins as a travelogue. As we watch an impossible number of persons board an ocean liner, the narrator tell us, "Each year thousands of fun- and sun-worshiping vacationists flock to the Hawaiian islands, eight semi-tropical islands nestled like sparkling gems in the languid waters of the blue Pacific." The cartoon provides visual puns and wacky sight gags as we are taken to "dazzling Diamond Head"; Pearl Harbor (a harbor surrounded by a giant pearl necklace); Waikiki Beach; and a still-active volcano (that needs a spittoon for its eruptions). We see how poi is made and how canned pineapple is harvested. We witness a luau and see a native girl throw a lei on Jimmy Durante's nose. Next, we're invited to follow the bouncing ball and sing along to "Blue Hawaii."
Trivia[]
Groucho and Harpo Marx and Jimmy Durante are caricatured.
